Lebanese government owns two networks which are operated by Orascom Telecom (Egypt) and Zain (Kuwait) for a management fee.
“Broadband affordability improved drastically in August 2011 when a decree was passed that slashed tariffs and increased speeds, with tariffs reductions of up to 80%,” says a telecom report from Budde Comm.
According to the recent telecom indicators (December 2011), the mobile market penetration in Lebanon is 81% with 2 service providers who are state-owned: touch (Zain) and Alfa (Orascom Telecom). The fixed market penetration (for residential subscribers) is 64% with the only service provider being Ogero Telecom, which is state-owned. The internet market penetration (including unlicensed providers) stands at 32%. There are currently 16 privately-owned service providers within the internet market in Lebanon. As for the broadband market, there are 7 ADSL services providers, 16 wireless services providers and the penetration rate equals to 24%.
